Abstract
This is a preliminary report on the findings of a survey conducted among the San Francisco Bay Area Chinese-Americans under the auspices of the Asia Research Associates of Menlo Park, California. Due to budget limitations, the Chinatowns of San Francisco and Oakland are excluded. A questionnaire was administered to collect empirical data on the situation of the Chinese Americans in the Bay Area today in the spring of 1975.
The Chinese-Americans of San Francisco Bay Area is a highly educated professional group, 60% are foreign born while the rest are native-born second or third generation Chinese. Most of them are Americans now and only the color of their skin and some cultural traits still reveal traces of their Chinese ancestry. They have their own organizations either based on professions or ethnic origins. In fact, they live mostly among the middle class Americans in the suburban homes and participate in community activities regularly. To a great extent, they have been integrated to American life both economically and politically.
Higher educational attainment gives the Bay Area Chinese better qualifications to secure lucrative occupational positions. They are not discriminated against in their jobs and enjoy equal pay, position and authority to the American whites. However, racial prejudice assumes more subtle forms in that they are barred from the highest positions and are often victims of power politics in the companies where they work.
The rewards that the Bay Area Chinese get from their jobs are as good as the Americans. In fact, there are signs that they even get higher income than the median income of U.S. individuals and families. This naturally gives a sound economic base for their nuclear families. With their thrifty tradition and wise investments both in securities and real estate, they have reached a prosperous stage far beyond the dream of their forbears who crossed the ocean seeking for the “land of promise.”
