Abstract
The United States is generally regarded as the most powerful nation in the world today. Its educational system is also generally regarded as the model for most of the nations to improve their schools. In fact, people of the world are impressed by the philosophy, aims, nature, organization, history, curriculum, teaching methods and facilities of the American education.

However, the American society is changing rapidly in recent years. It is a fact that the school programs have lagged behind the present condition in life in the United States. American education, particularly the secondary education, faces the following major problems:

1. The racial misunderstanding and unrest.

2. The problem of discipline in the school.

3. The low morale of teachers.

4. The lack of the enthusiastic support from the American public.

The purpose of the article is to discuss these problems, especially in the secondary schools of the southern states, and has no intention of giving any answers.
