摘要
歷來批評家對於海明威小說裡內心獨白的運用往往未加深究。其實在他的後期作品中，內心獨白使用得相當廣泛，對於人物丶主題與結構都有極大的影響。

內心獨白 (interior monologue) 意識流小說的一種技巧。海明威在《戰地鐘聲》一書裡，以回憶與內心獨白，將故事的時空限制——三天之中侷限於一處小區域——擴大到主角自幼時以來的經歷，並經由游擊隊員口中，推展到西班牙內戰以前的社會現象。空間方面更延伸到美國蒙太納州，以及西班牙各地，大大地豐富了故事的內容。同時經由各主要人物的獨白，討論政治、革命、戰爭、西班牙人、家庭、婚姻、男女關係、責任、死亡等問題。尤其是主角約登 (Robert Jordan) 內心的掙扎，對愛情的看法，戰爭的態度，皆由內心獨白毫無保留地呈現出來。在結構方面，由於回憶和獨白的篇幅往往很長，並且被安排在適當的段落，對這個充滿戰爭與死亡的故事，產生了平衡的作用。

結論指出，內心獨白在《戰地鐘聲》一書中，扮演擧舉足輕重的角色，使人物的多面性更爲清晰，情節更為豐富，主題更加複雜。

Abstract
The application of interior monologues in Hemingway’s novels has only infrequently attracted the attention of critics. In fact, the use of interior monologues in his later works is broad and has a significant influence on his characters, theme and structure. Interior monologue is a stream of consciousness literary device. In For Whom the Bell Tolls, the use of reminiscence and interior monologue means that the story’s spatial and temporal limits—the story takes place in a small geographic area within a three-day time frame—is expanded to encompass the childhood experiences of the protagonist and also, through the speech of the guerillas, the images extend to pre-Spanish Civil War society. Spatial aspects are also extended to the state of Montana and all parts of Spain, greatly enriching the novel’s content. At the same time, through the monologues of a variety of protagonists, we can examine the issues of politics, revolution, war, Spanish people, family, marriage, male-female relationships, responsibility and death. In particular, the inner conflict of the protagonist Robert Jordan is expressed in his interior monologues, which describe his opinions about love and his attitude toward war. Structurally, due to the length of the reminiscences and monologues, they have been arranged into the appropriate sections, thus achieving a sense of balance in a violent and sometimes barbaric epic. In conclusion, interior monologue in For Whom the Bell Tolls plays a pivotal role, enhancing the characters’ multi-dimensionality, enriching the plot and enhancing the novel’s prevailing themes.
