Abstract
This paper attempts to examine the work situation and salary conditions of Asian female immigrants to the United States. The research focuses on Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Japanese, Indian and Vietnamese female subjects. The main theoretical concepts discussed in this paper are “double negative,” “doubly disadvantaged” and “three-fold oppression.” The objective of this research is to examine whether female immigrants to the United States experience double or even triple discrimination in the American work place because of their sex, birth place and/or class status. The main source of data for this study comes from the 1980 census, which is comprised of a 1% sample of the total population. The analysis compared the economic performance of Asian immigrant women with their immigrant men counterparts as well as white and black women. The data showed that gender appeared to be more important than ethnicity in affecting labor force participation rates, unemployment rates, and occupational distribution. To further assess the effects of gender upon earnings, a regression analysis was performed, which shows that hourly earnings of immigrant women are significantly lower (about 10 to 23%) than those of immigrant men with similar social characteristics (e.g. human capital, adjustment to the host society, and position in the labor market).
