摘要
赫德雖然是西洋近代思想史上一位眾所周知的人物，但他在社會學理論方面的見解則一向很少受到注意。本文嘗試對赫德有關社會世界的學說作一較全面的探討。赫德由人類語言含藏群體歷代累積的經驗申論人在本性上是一種社會的存有。他把使用同一語言的群體稱為民族，作為考察人類社會生活的主要對象單位。他詳細分析氣候、資質和傳統三者對於各民族特性和發展的影響，但他也強調人的自由選擇和主動開創的能力。他認為每個民族都有其生活方式和幸福理念，不可以某一民族的方式和理念強加在其他民族之上。赫德論證人作為社會成員的身分是構成他的個體性的一個重要成分，他也採取動態的傳統觀，認為每一代人都對自己的傳統作重新詮釋和選擇增益，這些都是極具社會學洞識和啟發性的說法。他以語言作為區分各民族社群的依據則有內在和應用上的困難。

Abstract
Though Herder is a prominent figure in European intellectual history, his contributions to sociological theory have not been sufficiently noticed. The present paper attempts to provide a systematic exposition of Herder’s views concerning the social world and social reality. The three main sections deal, respectively, with (1) Herder’s argument for the sociality of man based on an analysis of human language; (2) Herder’s discussion of the three determining factors of man’s social life: climate, genius and tradition; and, (3) Herder’s criticism of modern European societies and nations. The concluding section offers some appreciative and critical comments on Herder’s social theory.
