摘要
魏德邁將軍學養人品俱優，在曾在中國戰區服役過的美軍將領中真正具有中國人敦厚、謙遜以及重情義的特質。在中國戰區參謀長任內，魏氏以同情、諒解與包容的態度對待蔣介石及其政府，並積極代為爭取美國政府援助，同時又能直言不諱，指出其弊端及亟需改革之處。

1947年，魏德邁又奉杜魯門之命來華實地調查，可惜其援華建議並未為國務卿馬歇爾所接受，報告亦遭壓制。在國共內戰的大悲劇中，魏氏的確曾真心誠意地為國民黨政府盡一份心力，可惜當時若干主客觀因素匯聚而成的歷史洪流非其個人所能抗拒。國民黨在內戰中的失敗，固然是蔣介石個人生涯中最大的悲劇，也是魏德邁一生中極大的憾事。

Abstract
General Albert C. Wedemeyer (1897-1989) was a well-trained strategist with a gentle character. While serving as Chiang Kai-shek’s chief of staff during the Second World War, Wedemeyer, unlike his predecessor General Joseph W. Stilwell, treated Chiang and his Nationalist Government with sympathy and understanding.

Wedemeyer did his best to obtain support for Chiang and his government. But, at the same time he frankly pointed out their problems and weaknesses, such as corruption and inefficiency. He earnestly urged Chiang to take the necessary measures to reform his government.

In July 1947, President Harry S. Truman ordered Wedemeyer to lead a fact-finding mission to China. The findings dismayed Wedemeyer. Not only had Chiang failed to reform his government, but the conditions in China were further deteriorating.

However, Wedemeyer, despite his disappointment, recom-mended that military and economic assistance be extended to the Nationalist government. Unfortunately, Wedemeyer’s report to Truman, as well as his recommendations, were rejected by the secretary of state and the Nationalists were routed by the Communists in the Chinese civil war.
