摘要
本文題旨在於重新闡釋辛默爾對現代社會所進行的社會學反思。研究者習於將他所解析的現代性定焦在文化診斷與文化批判的範圍，本文的立場是他的文化論述必須回頭參照他早期打好的社會學基礎：社會分化理論。辛默爾藉此理論深入現代社會的核心特質，個體性。本文意圖指出在他的早期著作《論社會分化》裡早已隱含著《貨幣哲學》裡的文化論述主軸。他的社會分化理論與後來的文化客觀化論述，甚至與末期提出的生命形式化論述一脈相通。本文強調辛默爾在《論社會分化》裡就藉由「相互作用」原則剖析現代社會，這種「後現代觀點」較能適切掌握當前的現代性，並且避免傳統社會學向來隱含的大敘事風格。

Abstract
This paper aims to reinterpret Simmel’s sociological reflection on modern society. Simmel’s analysis of modernity has usually been limited to cultural diagnosis and cultural critique. This article suggests that to understand Simmel’s discourse on culture correctly, one has to go back to his early phase: the theory of social differentiation, in which Simmel gets to the heart of modern society-individuality. This article tries to indicate that the main idea of his widely accepted work, Philosophie des Geldes, should be traced back to Simmel’s early writing: Ueber Sociale Differenzierung. There is an immanent relation between his three main concepts: social differentiation, the objectification of culture (Objektivierung der Kultur) and the form of life (Lebensform) in his later phase. Simmel has analyzed modern society from the perspective of “reciprocal effects” or “interaction” (Wechselwirkung). This article argues that this perspective could be a better way to grasp contemporary modernity, which could avoid the problem of grand narrative behind classical sociological theory.
